Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. This position works with the National External Diploma Program (NEDP) Lead Assessor/Advisor to ensure that the NEDP is administered according to national standards. The Advisor/Assessor serves as a facilitator of learning, as well as a liaison between the program and the student. An Advisor/Assessor needs to have faith in the adult student’s ability and must encourage the student to trust in his/her ability as a learner.

Reports to: Director I, Adult Education

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Adult Education staff to ensure that NEDP adult learners experience a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Performs CSM Adult Education orientations to introduce NEDP to prospective students.
  • Responsible for administering and evaluating web-based diagnostic and assessment materials for students in the NEDP.
  • Prepares students for modules.
  • Reviews student electronic portfolio and assists other assessors in doing so as well.
  • Responsible for accurately recording and reporting on NEDP student’s attendance and progress according to NEDP requirements.
  • Submits required client data in a timely manner (daily, weekly, monthly).
  • Works with the Adult Education team in the development of the program’s Data Quality Plan.
  • Attends mandatory scheduled staff meeting and staff development sessions.
  • Attends DLLR/State required meetings for NEDP staff.
  • Maintains regular communication with Lead NEDP Assessor/Advisor and Director of Adult Education.

Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree  
  • Experience working within the field of adult education.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Certified NEDP Advisor/Assessor; if not certified must be willing to work toward earning that certification within his/her first year of employment.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Able to adapt to a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, educational technologies, and other office equipment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility with schedule; some evenings and/or weekends may occasionally be required.
  • Must be able to travel to all county campus locations as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.

Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment.
