Job Description

The Associate Director for the Woodrick Center for Inclusion & Multicultural Affairs will provide high-profile, multi-layered, and time-sensitive work on behalf of Grand Rapids Community College. This position is charged with advocating and championing a student-centered, inclusive approach for diversified populations on campus. The role will assist in increasing the access, retention, and success of historically underrepresented students, focusing their engagement in academic initiatives and co-curricular activities that facilitate student success. This position will help lead and facilitate training and professional development projects that support self-exploration and critical dialogue and build institutional cultural competency. This role will help support the assessment of the center's initiatives and manage a comprehensive budget and student engagement. The person in this role must thrive in an environment dedicated to advancing equity through education, training and development, data-informed services, collaboration, flexibility, and an unwavering commitment to social justice. This type of work involves acute attention to detail, logistics management, public speaking, and engagement with a wide range of campus and community stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Student Outreach and Engagement

  • Provide personal growth and professional development workshops that move students toward academic goals.
  • Create student engagement initiatives for historically under-represented or BIPOC populations that support ALAS, Brother 2 Brother, and NIA student engagement groups
  • Serve as outreach and liaison between Woodrick Center and GRCC’s student affinity organizations.
  • Develop culturally affirming training opportunities that situate students' racial, ethnic, and gender identities as assets.
  • Coordinate unit involvement with student outreach and engagement events, including Open Houses, Orientation, and Bridges to College-Raider Ready, and similar events sponsored by Academic and Student Affairs (ASA).
  • Participate in committee service related to assessment, enrollment management, retention, orientation, and student support services. Contribute to meetings, advocate for students, and reliably convey critical points from meetings to the Woodrick Center team.

Training and Development

  • Develop curriculum and lead equity training and professional development sessions for GRCC faculty, staff, and students in collaboration with areas across GRCC to support student access, retention, and success.
  • Provide equity-centered workshop sessions for Learning Day, Faculty Learning Day, Summer Teaching Institute, Open House, Orientation and other external opportunities.
  • Develop curriculum and lead equity training sessions for external partners in non-profit and corporate settings through the Woodrick Center.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of being both a college employee and a change agent who appropriately challenges the structures, processes, policies, and culture of the institution to bring about meaningful change to promote social justice and equity.
  • Develop curriculum and facilitate training sessions that demonstrate awareness and understanding of institutional and structural bias and their impact on historically excluded student, faculty, and staff communities, in collaboration with areas across GRCC to support student access, retention, and success.
  • Demonstrate the ability to keep abreast of current research on the experiences of historically excluded student, faculty, and staff communities in higher education.
  • Demonstrate acute awareness and understanding of institutional and structural biases and their impact on historically excluded students, faculty, and staff.
  • Work effectively with people of multiple identities and positionalities, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, disability, socioeconomic status, worldview, and other significant aspects of identity.
  • Provide effective advocacy for historically excluded communities (verbal and writing).

Assessment

  • Develop and identify practical assessment tools and resources that capture the impact of the Woodrick Center initiatives.
  • Facilitate data collection and assessment for the Woodrick Center initiatives, grant-funded projects, and campus climate. Collaborate with Institutional Research to produce reports to track key indicators and data summaries.
  • Develop print and digital materials that keep the college community informed about overall progress toward diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Prepare presentations, and facilitate discussions about data findings and program progress.
  • Evaluate statistical and narrative reports, consult Woodrick Center Director on the need for data informed program improvements and decision making.
  • Complete external data surveys, questionnaires, and data-informed interviews.

Budget Management

  • Highly proficient in using electronic budget information systems PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office, and other applications.
    • Manage, process, and reconcile Pro card expenditures for the center.
    • Manage grant-funded budget activities to ensure compliance with grant requirements
    • Reconcile invoices, contract agreements and process travel and reimbursement.
  • Collaborate with the budget office to process appropriate paperwork, project future needs and make recommendations for budget development.
  • Use technology resources to create expenditures database, data entry forms, and reports. Manipulate large or complex spreadsheets using mathematical formulas to calculate data, link worksheets, and import data from other sources.
  • Maintain regular communication with Woodrick Center Director about budgetary transactions and management through a monthly budget report.

  • Demonstrate the ability to take responsibility for work performance, balance critical job requirements, initiating and completing work, managing time/conflict/stress, use resources and technology-based systems to organize, prioritize, and keep track of information and work in progress.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence to supervision, guidance, and feedback through constructive action.
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours and during peak times is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to college policies and procedures.
  • Temporary or special projects as assigned by the Woodrick Center Director.
  • This role is a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs will be trained and responsible for reporting Clery Reportable Crimes to Campus Police as required by the Clery Act.
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred

 

Work Experience

  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated and successful experience in a college setting.
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated presentation, public speaking, and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Experience designing or identifying assessment tools that support the evaluation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience developing curriculum and facilitating workshops and training related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This type of experience may be established by a combination of professional, para-professional, or other related practical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating authentic relationships with historically excluded student communities that are, consequently, underserved and underrepresented in post-secondary environments.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent written communication and engaging in highly effective verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience producing legible and concise reports, internal memos, and correspondence.

 

Skills

  • Must have working knowledge and understanding of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1991 Civil Rights Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other applicable law.
  • Must have working knowledge and understanding of FERPA, HIPAA, and related privacy standards and maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Must possess excellent proofreading skills and aptitude for detailed work.
